Snooker was invented sometime towards the end of the 19th century and after a period in the doldrums was brought alive once more in the 1970’s when BBC2’s ‘Pot Black’ came on the scene. Since then it has gained in popularity and remains a hugely popular pastime and the televised championships including the recently completed World Championships from the Crucible in Sheffield attract millions of viewers worldwide. It can be difficult though to find places to play particularly those offering a very good standard of table at a reasonable cost. ‘Touching Cloth’ is a snooker and pool lounge situated in Calle Noruega Torrevieja close to the Playa de Los Locos. Owned and run by Lee Etherington there are two beautifully restored and refurbished full size snooker tables and a pool table. There is no need to pay membership costs because there aren’t any, you simply pay for the time you play and the hourly rates are extremely competitive, perfect in these ‘Crisis’ driven times when everyone is watching the pennies.
Lee has always loved snooker from an early age and into his teens when he first followed some of the great players of those times such as Jimmy White and Alex Higgins. He had also fallen in love with Spain and wanted to live here so when it came to moving and thinking of setting up a business what better than to do something he loved and that is where the idea of his snooker and pool lounge came from. He had to work hard to design and fit out the building, working in the UK at the same time before he moved to Spain on a full time basis. Two completely refurbished full size mahogany tables were shipped from England and a professional fitter flown across to set them up and ensure they are just right; they look immaculate. The facilities are fully air-conditioned and there is a bar to buy drinks and refreshments from. Touching Cloth is open from midday to midnight seven days a week. Remember there is no joining or membership fee you just pay for the hours you play.
If you are keen on playing snooker or pool then you must check out ‘Touching Cloth’. It is situated in the Bulevar Playa just off Calle Noruega near the Playa los Locos. From the beach end you will find it about 50 metres up Calle Noruega on the left hand side set back in a small square. The signs for Touching Cloth are Calle Noruega itself.
